GIVING STORIES

Our Foundation is making a difference.

Dan G. Naimoli Fund - In memory of selfless young man. Created in 2011, a year after Dan Naimoli unexpectedly passed at age 28, this fund is in memory of an amazing public servant. Dan's parents, Gary and Vivian, his sister Angela and five of Dan’s many friends and colleagues decided to start the fund in his honor. As Dan's sister Angela Amorosino stated in a news story describing the establishment of the fund, “When he died, we had a lot of money coming in from all over and didn’t know where it was supposed to go. This is what Dan would have wanted.” The fund’s mission statement reflects a goal: The purpose of the Dan G. Naimoli Memorial Fund is to continue Dan’s legacy of civil service by providing resources to local and surrounding communities through fundraising and volunteer efforts. Dan’s true calling was public service to his community, and his contributions were many and varied. As a Boy Scout in Southington’s Troop 17, his effort earned him the highest attainable rank, that of Eagle Scout, a feat achieved by only 4% of Scouts nationwide. Dan graduated from Wilcox Tech, where he twice won first prize in the VICA (now named SkillsUSA) automotive division representing his school in this statewide competition. In January of 2001, he enlisted in the CT Army National Guard, serving for ten years and rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant until his untimely death. He was a member of the South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department for six years, and once received their annual award for accumulating the most volunteer time. In 2008, following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather and grandfather, Dan became a police officer in the Meriden department, serving as a patrolman until his passing. Dan Naimoli’s numerous volunteer and professional achievements were centered around the protection of and assistance to others. This selfless, caring attitude carried over as a devoted father to sons Nicholas, currently employed in the fiber optics industry, and Robert, presently a senior at Platt High School here in Meriden. As the name implies, the aim of the Dan G. Naimoli Memorial Fund is to assist local organizations that mirror Dan’s public spirit. The family has raised approximately $80,000 by holding various fundraisers in his name, and the current recipients of the fund’s financial support, both the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden and the Beat the Street Community Center, reflect Dan’s devotion to his community and his family. Previous donations to entities such as the South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department, City of Meriden Police Department, Dan’s former Boy Scout Troop 17, the Epilepsy Foundation of CT, Hole in the Wall Camp, The Meriden Boys & Girls Club, Summer Campership Fund, Wysh House, and the CT Food Bank have also kept his memory alive. If towns and cities are to be strong and successful, they require both individual volunteers working to help others as well as those who choose to serve their community as a career. Dan G. Naimoli was both. The foundation that carries his name reflects the selfless attitude of this very special person.

Fred Ulbrich Memorial Fund - Wallingford's greatest philanthropist. Established in 2016, after Fred Ulbrich Jr.'s passing in April 2014, as a way of honoring and continuing the charitable efforts of Frederick C. Ulbrich Jr. Fred was an active member in his community. He was a founding member of the Wallingford Rotary Club, the former Director of the Oakdale Musical Theater, campaign Chairman of the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, and Co-Chairman of the Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club in Wallingford, among others. The YMCA's summer program is named Camp Ulbrich in honor of his constant support and fundraising efforts. In Fred's honor, the Ulbrich Family, through the Ulbrich Philanthropy Committee, is committed to evaluating and distributing monetary donations to charitable organizations. These donations provide a direct benefit towards Ulbrich employees and their communities in the areas of education, music, arts, athletics, cultural engagement, charitable events and community service. By supporting local organizations and programs that promote the development of youth of Wallingford, North Haven and Meriden, the fund, continues the philanthropic efforts that Fred Ulbrich Jr. held close to his heart.

Philip and Jane Ashton Fund - a legacy of giving. Philip T. Ashton (1934-2017) was a man all about legacy. He believed to his core that each person was capable of making the world a better place. Phil's lifelong "place" was the community of Meriden, and his life was a reflection of his beliefs. His legacy work began as a young man at Yale University organizing blood drives. After he was married, Phil became very active in his church and community at large. Over his life, Phil served on many boards, community service organizations, and positions in local government. He would never ask others to give or do more than he himself was willing to do. At times Phil asked a lot of others in the Meriden area, and he gave a lot on so many levels. His interests and service were vast. Phil always wanted Meriden, and the area, to be a great place to live; raise a family; have a business; and be of service to others. In 1994 he was co-chair of the United Way Campaign. This guided him to be more involved in the organization, and then involved in the Community Foundation of Central Connecticut. Phil, and a few other wise men, wanted this foundation to evolve and grow. He knew his visions for Meriden, and the people of Meriden, were going to require organized financial support in the future. In 1997 the Meriden-Wallingford Foundation was established to specifically serve Meriden and Wallingford. Phil, and others, went into the community to solicit donors to help create several funds that would help support youth, businesses, specific service organizations, health, and much more in our community. Phil, and his wife Jane, had a special heart for the youth of Meriden. Phil gave generously of his time and talents to help make the Boys and Girls Club and Camp Cuno a better organization, with better physical plants. They created the Philip and Jane Ashton Fund, an endowment fund for the Boys and Girls Club of Meriden, which provides yearly funding for programs. The Ashton’s believed all youth should have opportunities to help them reach their potential. Phil and Jane were also co-founders of the Meriden Wallingford Chrysalis Fund. Phil though this organization needed more financial support to care for women, and children, who were victims of domestic violence in our community. With the help of Phil and others, the Meriden-Wallingford Community Foundation has grown, and now has over twenty endowment funds. These endowment funds make our community a better place to live. And there is plenty of room to create new funds that will support activities and the lives of Meriden and Wallingford residents. Philip T. Ashton received many awards, and recognitions for his service in his lifetime. That was never what motivated or inspired Phil. He wanted to make the world a better place, and he did.
